The New Art of Eating is Out!

Finally, a mainstream magazine with interesting articles for food and wine fans. This issue features the first part of a major work on Franche-Comté's Gruyère de Comté cheese by Ed Behr. Next issue, will feature Vin Jaune!

In other personal reading activity, I highly recommend The Concert by Albanian author Ismael Kadare. This book is a must for Enver Hoxha fans or readers of Kadar's other works like Palace of Dreams.

I was in New Canaan, Connecticut, this past weekend and noticed that everyone there is reading Herman Melville's Moby Dick. Go figure!

I'm going up the country, babe don't you wanna go
I'm going up the country, babe don't you wanna go
I'm going to some place where I've never been before
I'm going, I'm going where the water tastes like wine
Well I'm going where the water tastes like wine
We can jump in the water, stay drunk all the time
I'm gonna leave this city, got to get away
I'm gonna leave this city, got to get away
All this fussing and fighting, man, you know I sure can't stay
Now baby, pack your leaving trunk, you know we've got to leave today
Just exactly where we're going I cannot say, but We might even leave
the USA 'Cause there's a brand new game that I want to play
No use of you running, or screaming and crying
'Cause you've got a home as long as I've got mine

You have your "Art of Eating" already??

What does a guy have to do to get a mailing list to work, anyway? Everyone else will have cleaned out all the cool Comté while I sit here sucking hind teat. I could not be more vexed.

OTOH, I just finished "The Origin of Species," which despite a career as a has-been scientist I'd never read. It's awfully good. That Darwin was one hell of a smart guy. He pretty much figured it all out without having the least notion of how inheritance works. No genes, no DNA, nada. Those Intelligent Design cretins need to have their faces immersed in the nearest toilets.

Do you think it would make a good Christmas gift?
- Joe Dressner 12-07-2005 9:54 am

you mean that monkey jumping around in the cage at the zoo is my great-grandfather?
- ishmael (guest) 12-07-2005 11:09 am

some of the comments here are rather insensitive.

The Art of Eating or The Origin of Species? Either could be good but you would have to know your audience. I first received the Art of Eating as a Christmas gift from a wise friend, and I appreciate it to this day.

The Origin of the Species?

i for one, disagree with eating fish on fridays.

there exists a censorship issue here which is curtailing a significant amount of creativity. accoring to an insider a certain person doesn't like anyone being funnier than he is.
- moby dick (guest) 12-08-2005 6:04 pm

see, you just got censored. that'll teach you to be funnier than you-know-who.
- moby dick (guest) 12-08-2005 7:18 pm

hey who wrote that song? That was that weird fuzzy haired dude, wasn't that you joe in the 70's?...I got my mag today.. beautiful hommage to the pacman

something must be done. humor is being stifled and he is acting like a madman.

The Origin of Species (the category, not the individual members) would be a fine gift for the right audience, but once you get past me I don't know anyone with the patience to read it.

But it's totally and amazingly cool how far that guy got on his own. How many different things he explained all at once when he saw it whole. He probably gets enough credit in many countries, but this may not be one of them.
